Mumbai's Transport Crisis: A City Brought to a Standstill by a Gas Pipeline Issue
Mumbai, the bustling financial center of India, faced a significant challenge on November 17th, as a damaged gas pipeline wreaked havoc on the city's transportation system. Long queues at fuel stations became a common sight, with autorickshaws and taxis bearing the brunt of the disruption. The issue originated from a third-party-caused damage to GAIL's primary gas supply pipeline within the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) compound, which led to a critical drop in pressure across the network.
But here's where it gets intriguing: this disruption didn't just affect a few stations; it hit CNG stations across Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, leaving public transport services in disarray. And the impact was immediate. By morning, numerous CNG stations, including those run by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), were non-operational due to the low gas supply pressure.
The human impact was evident. Chetan Modi, president of the Petrol Dealers Association (Mumbai), shared his frustration, stating that he had to keep his pump shut due to the lack of gas pressure. School bus operations were also affected, with operators like Anil Garg mentioning the difficulties in securing CNG for their vehicles, leading to route adjustments. Auto rickshaw drivers, like Sufiyan Khan, were left with tough choices, deciding between waiting in long queues or risking running out of gas during their early morning shifts.
And this is where it gets controversial: the shortage of CNG had a ripple effect on ride-hailing platforms. Ola and Uber saw surge pricing, with fares skyrocketing. A trip that typically costs ₹400-₹450 surged to over ₹600! The financial burden on commuters was immediate and significant.
MGL assured that domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) consumers would be prioritized, and by evening, they gradually restored the gas supply. However, the question remains: could more have been done to prevent or mitigate this crisis? Were there alternative supply routes or backup plans in place? These are the discussions that Mumbai's residents and authorities will undoubtedly be having in the aftermath of this event.
