But one company is stepping up to prevent this environmental nightmare, and they're doing it right in the heart of the UK. Green Tech Industries (GTI), a pioneering EV battery recycling firm, is not just expanding; they're aiming to revolutionize the industry.
Just a short eight months after settling into their new facility, GTI has announced ambitious plans for growth, including a significant boost to their workforce. This isn't just about business; it's about creating a sustainable future.
GTI's core mission is to take used EV batteries – the complex powerhouses that drive our electric cars – and meticulously recycle their components. They're not just crushing and melting; they're carefully dismantling, breaking down materials to their basic elements, and salvaging valuable components for reuse in new batteries or other applications. This process keeps precious resources in circulation and reduces the need for environmentally damaging mining of raw materials.
Located in Southam Park, Southam, GTI's current team of 10 is poised to double to 20. Chief Executive Tony Booth, a 43-year-old Coventry native, envisions a "Midlands-based technology center and center of excellence." This flagship factory, he hopes, will serve as a blueprint for future recycling facilities.
Booth's entrepreneurial journey began in 2018 when he recognized a critical gap in the burgeoning green economy: effective waste management and recycling solutions for EV batteries. Since then, he's been investing heavily in developing innovative processes to safely strip down batteries, repurpose usable components, and recertify them for resale into the industry.
"The factory will enable us to be able to show customers, and also the industry, what we're about and what we can do," Booth explains. "We're seeing a lot of materials coming through to us where a car has had something go wrong with it and it's ended up having to be written off because there's no where to fix it." This highlights a crucial point: the lack of repair options for EVs is contributing to battery waste, further emphasizing the need for robust recycling infrastructure. And this is the part most people miss... the recycling industry is also linked to the ability to repair and maintain existing vehicles.
But here's where it gets controversial... some argue that focusing solely on recycling is a band-aid solution. Shouldn't manufacturers be designing batteries that are easier to repair and repurpose in the first place? What responsibility do they have to reduce waste at the design stage?
For Booth, employing local talent is a deeply personal mission. Having grown up in Coventry and attended President Kennedy School, he's committed to providing opportunities for people in the region.
"It's a big passion of mine, I really want to make sure we give jobs back to the local area," he says. GTI is actively recruiting locally, emphasizing that prior experience isn't always necessary. "We're doing a recruitment drive locally because we actually want to make sure that [people] feel like they can come and work at an engineering company like this, without having all of the skills. We will instill [those in] them through our training programmes on site." This commitment to training and development makes GTI an attractive employer and contributes to the growth of a skilled workforce in the green tech sector.
